PARTS OF CRASHED US WWII PLANE RECOVERED NEAR CASTLEBLAYNEY

A team of archaeologists working with school students from Ballybay and Derry have recovered parts from a US Air Force P-38 Lightning aircraft that crashed near Castleblayney during the Second World war. The items removed from the site at Creighanroe close to Annyalla and the border with Co. Armagh will eventually go on display at Monaghan County Museum, which has been a partner in the project. They will form part of the nationally acclaimed exhibition ‘The Monaghan Spitfire – Life on the Border with a World at War’, which has been extended until the end of this year because of its popularity.

Following cleaning of the parts recovered, the following items have so far been identified: part of a fairing from the engine, two .50 calibre bullets, and a window…
