President Higgins and his wife Sabina hosted a special concert last Friday evening in Dublin in celebration of Irish country music. The event was also to acknowledge the work being undertaken by various organisations in fostering, and developing, strong rural communities.

The concert is part of a series of garden parties at Áras an Uachtaráin to celebrate particular people and organisations who work on themes that the President wants to highlight. Organisations invited to the concert included a range of rural community organisations as well as national organisations such as Muintir na Tíre, Irish Men’s Sheds, Volunteer Ireland, Irish Rural Link and farmers’ associations.

President Higgins told the gathering: “This evening is a great celebration of the many different groups and organisations and indeed individuals who contribute so much to community life around the country and particularly through Irish country music. How better to celebrate than through the medium of music and in particular the great tradition of Irish country music which, inspired in many ways by American country…
