THE “public scandal” over a ‘Group Home’ in Carrickmacross lying idle—and unused—some two years after it was completed to serve specific accommodations needs, has led to a call this week from South Monaghan Sinn Féin councillor Colm Carthy for immediate action to bring the premises into use, in accordance with an earlier assurance by the HSE that it would be in use by the end of the second quarter of 2019 Cllr.

Carthy, who also raised the matter at a County Council meeting on Monday, said this is a huge issue with locals in South Monaghan who have to look at the building lying empty and unused. He said the need for a ‘Group Home’ for persons with physical and sensory difficulties was in the pipeline for more than 15 years.

“There were many false starts and broken promises linked to the development but the families of those who would eventually live in the facility were delighted in 2016 to see the building works commence. However, fast forward to 2019, and the building has now been completed for over 2 years..
