‘THE EIRGRID FILES’ SERIES RECOGNISED AT LOCAL IRELAND AWARDS CEREMONY

The EirGrid Files compiled by Michael Fisher was one of four stories shortlisted for ‘Best news series of the year’ at the Local Ireland awards. The extensive revelations about the semi-state company that operates the electricity grid in Ireland were published in The Northern Standard in July last year.

The other finalists in this category were ‘Clare’s Drug Crisis’ by Carol Byrne and Owen Ryan of the Clare Champion; ‘Wiped Out’ about the devastation caused by forest fires by Ann Casey, Gavin Becton and Louise Walsh of the Meath Chronicle; and ‘Ten-T Funding Issues’ by Edwin McGreal and Anton McNulty of the Mayo News, winner of the overall prize.

The citation on the certificate stated: “Over eight weeks the Northern Standard published 134 email documents obtained under Freedom of Information requests concerning the proposed North South Interconnector, which, it claimed, exposed the close relationship between EirGrid and the Department of Communications. The documents, a sort of briefing bulletin from EirGrid to the Department, did not reflect the opposition to the….
