…an attack saw Cavan win a free out, while Stephen O’Hanlon was narrowly wide at the end of a good move before Cavan struck for their second point through Niall Murray in the fourth minute. A minute later one of the controversial decisions in the game when Conor Madden was adjudged to have been fouled in the area after he had been picked out with an inch perfect pass from Martin Reilly and referee Lane spread his arms for a penalty.

The decision was harsh in the extreme as Madden had not control the ball but had spilled it, and Rory Beggan got a foot to it to knock it away as Madden tripped over his leg, but the penalty stood and Martin Reilly converted to put Cavan five in front after five minutes. Monaghan drove forward again, but were turned over and Cavan countered with Conor Madden again in space and he put them six points in front after seven minutes.

Colin Walshe played an excellent ball in to Stephen O’Hanlon, but his effort fell short before Monaghan opened their account in the ninth minute when Rory Beggan converted a long-range free following a foul on Kieran Hughes.
