FUNDING OF €2M TOWARDS TREATING FISH WITH ENZYMES TO MAKE HIGHER VALUE FEED INGREDIENTS

From the outside, it looks like any other industrial warehouse at Lough Egish Food Park. But what goes on inside is unique in Europe. Monaghan might be known for its agriculture and agrifood industry. In this instance, it’s at the centre of what promises to be an important development in the field of aquaculture and the production of innovative products not seen elsewhere on this continent.

Bio-Marine Ingredients came to Co. Monaghan three years ago to set up a base to provide international markets with fish based proteins and oils. It is a joint venture between Irish fishing vessel owners and Norwegian partners who are experts in marine ingredients. The company has now received a boost of €2 million under the disruptive technologies fund set up by Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD.

She said the work being done there on the hydro fish project in conjunction with co-funder NUI Galway would mean that the fish product supply chain will be more sustainable. One of the key concerns in the aquaculture industry…
