AROUND 2,000 candidates are to contest the Local Elections on Friday 24th May, it emerged at the weekend, after the deadline for nominations closed. The candidates had however until Tuesday last to withdraw their nomination papers. There are 949 seats up for grabs on the 31 local authorities around the country, including those in Co. Monaghan, and the contest will take place across 166 local electoral areas.

Local Election candidates declared earlier this week in Co.
