Monaghan retain Division One status

Monaghan can look forward to a sixth consecutive year in the Allianz National Football League Division One after escaping the drop in last Sunday’s final round. Monaghan lost to Division One finalists Mayo in a high-scoring shoot-out in Castlebar, but with results elsewhere going in their favour – notably Roscommon losing to Kerry – they avoided what would have been a first relegation of Malachy O’Rourke’s time in charge.

It was Monaghan’s third time this decade to secure their status on the final day of the league and like back in 2010, they survived despite losing. Unlike that day, however, when a defeat in Killarney saw Monaghan escape by the narrowest of margins, this time it was done and dusted well before the conclusion, with table-toppers Kerry wrapping up a comfortable result in Roscommon.
