The Brexit imbroglio remained no nearer to resolution this week as the March 29 deadline for the UK’s departure from the European Union loomed ever closer. “We need certainties from Europe,” was a statement made by Cavan/Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin during a Dáil debate last week, and it was a pronouncement that was lent a prescient weight by events of ensuing days which have culminated in British Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcing yesterday (Wednesday) that she has written to European Council President Donald Tusk requesting an extension of the departure date until June 30. Subsequent news agency reports indicated that the European Commission was opposed to acceding to the request, with officials anxious that the Brexit issue was resolved in advance of the European Parliament elections scheduled for late May.
