Carmelo Abela, Foreign Minister of Malta, was on a visit to the Cavan/Monaghan region on Tuesday to study the Border situation at first hand in the context of the current Brexit situation.

The visit was facilitated by Fianna Fáil TD for the constituency Brendan Smith, who told the Northern Standard that Mr Abela’s time in the region should have impressed upon him “the absolute necessity to ensure that there are no obstacles to the movement of people, goods or services on this island following Brexit”.

The Foreign Minister addressed the Oireachtas All Party Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and Defence on Wednesday and held Brexit discussions with committee members.
