A SPANISH crane and plant operator was given a two-year suspended sentence at Monaghan Circuit Court yesterday (Wednesday) for causing the death of a 60-year old woman in a head-on collision in which it was established that his jeep had been travelling on the wrong side of the road. Ruperto Casasola Hernandez of Oviedo Asturies, Spain, had admitted his guilt in respect of dangerous driving at Feragh, Dunraymond, Monaghan on 23rd September 2017 that resulted in the death of Irina Metlina, who was in her early 60s and the passenger in a car being driven by her daughter. Judge John Aylmer, in suspending the sentence for two years, had noted that Mr Hernandez was a first-time offender in this respect who had come from his native country to attend all previous hearings (full report next week).
