COUNCILLOR CONNOLLY ADVOCATES TEXT INITIATIVE TO COMBAT MONAGHAN CRIME AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

The Monaghan Municipal District was urged at its meeting on Monday by Independent councillor Paudge Connolly to investigate the possibility of implementing the “see it say it” initiative, through which members of the public who witness incidents of criminality can alert the Gardaí via text message. Noting that there were continual discussions at Municipal District level about dangers in Monaghan Town and incidents of anti-social behaviour and people being attacked, Councillor Connolly said they had often bemoaned the fact that they had no CCTV system in the town centre.

However, there was another system which he thought the public would buy into much better. He then proceeded to outline details of the sayitseeit.ie initiative, which he said was a texting system which had been piloted in another town in the country and which cost €500 per year. Councillor Connolly pointed out that the system employed a text message number which the public could use if they saw something untoward happening. This could apply to incidents…
