JUSTICE MINISTER’S RESPONSE TO SHANE O’FARRELL INQUIRY CALL INADEQUATE – COUNCILLOR CARTHY

Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan TD came in for criticism from Sinn Féin’s Colm Carthy at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council for his response to the Council’s recent call for a public inquiry to be held into the circumstances of the death in a hit-and-run road traffic accident in August 2011 of young South Monaghan man Shane O’Farrell.

A letter from the Minister’s Department said it would be inappropriate for the Minister to comment on the Council’s request while an investigation by GSOC or the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was ongoing. The full reply from the Minister’s Private Secretary read as follows: “As the Council will be aware, there is a current investigation being conducted by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission into conduct which may lead to disciplinary proceedings against one or more Garda members.

That investigation is ongoing and it would not be proper for the Minister to comment….
