PRESIDENTIAL RACE – GALLAGHER GETS IN BUT Ó CAOLÁIN STAYS OUT

With the race for Áras an Uachtaráin hotting up, matters Presidential dominated much of the political and news agenda in Co Monaghan this week, writes Peter Hughes. While Monaghan Town-born entrepreneur Sean Gallagher secured the four local authority nominations he needed to contest the October 26 poll to decide the next President of Ireland, Cavan/Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin held firmly to his resolve not to be his party’s contender, despite strong support for his candidature at local and regional level both within and outside SF.

Having on Monday met two of the Independent candidates seeking local authority support to be on the ballot paper – Derry Dragons’ Den businessman Peter Casey and Dublin investigative journalist Gemma O’Doherty – Monaghan Co Council ultimately deigned not to play a “kingmaker” role.
