PUNISH DUMPING FROM CARS WITH PENALTY POINTS URGES CARRICK COUNCILLOR

Imposing penalty points on motorists from whose vehicles litter was strewn onto public roadways was advocated as a strong deterrent measure by Fianna Fáil councillor Pádraig McNally when Monaghan Co Council met on Monday.

The persistence of illegal dumping and the wanton discarding of packaging and other materials despite education campaigns and enhanced enforcement measures being introduced by the local authority in recent years amazed some councillors and angered others, principally Sinn Féin’s Brian McKenna who was unsparing in his condemnation of litter louts when initially raising the issue on Monday.
