Recent hopes that the return of services to Monaghan Hospital in order to help alleviate the current overcrowding crisis in the Irish hospital sphere was being actively considered by Minister for Health Simon Harris TD appeared to be dashed by a letter from the Minister circulated at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.

Responding to a recent motion from the Council seeking an upgrading of the Monaghan facility, the Minister held fast to the current policy of smaller and larger hospitals operating through hospital groups, stating that this would “provide a stronger role for smaller hospitals, like Monaghan Hospital, in delivering less complex care”.
