A more resilient and resourceful Monaghan fought a magnificent rearguard action in the final 10 minutes – 5 minutes of normal time and the 5 minutes of stoppage time added – to hold out for the narrowest of victories in this absorbing encounter against Kildare in St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge on Sunday last.

In that time Kildare laid siege to the Monaghan citadel in an effort to fashion either an equalising point or perhaps a match-winning goal, but the Monaghan defensive shield held firm with the result that Kevin Feely’s final effort from a greater distance than he was happy with tailed badly wide, much to the relief of the big Monaghan support in the Kildare venue which is badly in need of a facelift.
