Monaghan’s ambitions of appearing in a fourth Ulster Senior Football Championship Final in 5 years lay in tatters in the Athletic Grounds Armagh on Saturday evening last after the hot favourites were sensationally dumped out at the penultimate stage by a resurgent Down who simply hadn’t read the prematch script as they set about dismantling the form book with ruthless efficiency and relentless intensity.

On the day Down were worthy winners in that they were more clinical, although at times more cynical, in their approach and were able to counter Monaghan’s tactics very effectively.
