A late goal by Conor McManus was the score that ultimately saw Monaghan book their place in the semi-final of the Ulster senior football championship at the expense of Cavan in this highly charged cliff hanger that was played in front of a crowd of just short of 13,000 in Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday afternoon last.

Conditions on the day were far from ideal with a strong wind and intermittent heavy showers and in certain aspects that did affect the standard of play but both sides still served up an intriguing contest that was in the balance right to the very end.

Both sides came into this contest with a definite defensive strategy and the Cavan game plan seemed to be working for the bulk of the first half with Monaghan playing catch up on a number of occasions and only taking the lead for the first time in the in the 33rd minute. By half-…
