GARDAÍ and local residents, including an alert 19-years-old neighbour, saved the life of a man in his 40s from an overnight house fire in Castleblayney on Friday last.

Around 2.45 a.m on Friday morning, gardaí at Castleblayney received a report of the fire at a house in Upper Bree, Castleblayney, and of the man trapped in the house. Local residents have expressed their commendation this week for the bravery of Mr. Conor McCooey, 19, a near-neighbour, who raised the alarm and acted quickly in the rescue of Mr. Alan McArdle, who was trapped in an upper room at the dwelling.

Two local gardai who went to the scene used a ladder obtained at a nearby house and used it to assist in the rescue. Mr. McArdle was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel but was not taken to ..
