Monaghan’s minor and U-17 football teams experienced mixed fortunes in their provincial league knock-out games last Saturday.

The minor side fell to a 1-12 to 1-7 defeat against Derry in the Ulster Minor Football League Cup semi-final at Celtic Park. A Derry side backboned by several players from the St. Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt team that won the MacRory Cup last month, led throughout this game and they were 1-5 to 0-4 clear at half-time. Scores were few and far between for both teams in the third quarter, with Darren Geoghegan getting a point for Monaghan and the hosts adding 0-2 to their tally.

Derry popped over a couple of fisted scores at the start of the final quarter and with three substitutes getting their names on the scoresheet, they increased their lead to 1-10 to 0-5.
