THREE PEOPLE FROM LOCAL AREA ARRESTED

TWO men and a woman were arrested following a massive €2.8 million seizure of cannabis in Cootehill on Friday night last that resulted from a joint operation run by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Revenue’s Customs Service.

It is understood that the 143 kilos of the illicit substance was intercepted when a vehicle was stopped at the New Line-Church Street area of the town, and that a 36-year-old man and 50-year-old woman were subsequently arrested and detained at Ballyconnell Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.

Both are from the wider Cootehill area. Another man, aged 46, also from the town’s hinterland, was detained at the Garda station in Cavan as part of a follow-up operation.

Gardaí suspect that the huge haul of herbal cannabis was being moved at the behest of a north Dublin criminal gang and may have been destined for the Dublin market.

The three individuals have been released, and a file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, a Garda spokesperson confirmed to the Northern Standard yesterday (Tuesday).
