MINISTER VARADKAR KEEPING CLOSE EYE ON BREXIT FALLOUT IN BORDER COUNTIES

“Brexit potentially could undermine so much of the good work that people have been doing here for decades,” Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar told The Northern Standard during his visit to Co Monaghan on Monday.

In an interview at the conclusion of a county-wide tour in which he had studied the beneficial outworking to local communities of funding programmes administered by his Dept, Minister Varadkar made clear that he was keeping a close watching brief on how the decision by the UK to exit the European Union would impact on life in Co Monaghan and the wider Border region.

“I am on the Cabinet committee dealing with Brexit and there are two or three big areas of interest relevant to my Dept,” he pointed out.

The Minister said he wanted to ensure that people in the Republic of Ireland who received a pension from the UK did not lose any of their pension rights.
