POPE FRANCIS ACCEPTS RESIGNATION OF BISHOP OF CLOGHER DUE TO ILL HEALTH

It was announced on Saturday morning last that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Liam MacDaid as Bishop of Clogher due to ill health.
Ordained in July 2010 as successor to Joseph Duffy, Bishop MacDaid has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

In a pastoral letter read at Masses in the diocese on Sunday, the Bishop said he had found his condition becoming increasingly problematic and beginning to interfere with his capacity to fulfil his responsibilities.

Some months ago Bishop MacDaid on medical advice wrote to Pope Francis requesting him to accept his early retirement due to his ill health in accordance with provisions in the Code of Canon Law.

The Bishop’s retirement took effect immediately upon the announcement of the Pope’s acceptance of his resignation, which came at noon Rome time on Saturday.
