History was made last Thursday when Mannan Castle scooped the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge title for the very first time, winning the Irish qualifying event with a fantastic finishing run after a stuttering start!

In a real rollercoaster round of 18 holes, Mannan’s current Captain Lenny McKitterick and the club’s resident Professional, Kevin McGivern, tamed the course at Luttrellstown Castle Golf and Country Club (near Castleknock) while also seeing off the challenge of 54 other pairings from around the country to take the title two shots clear of their nearest challengers.

Afterwards, Warrenpoint native McGivern heaped praise on his playing partner:
“Only for Lenny, we wouldn’t have got over the line,” the Down man generously explained.
“He had a terrific back nine which was ironic given that he was joking about quitting after a bad start over the first five holes. It’s just as well he hung on!”

In beating the County Dublin’s Deer Park Hotel Golf and Spa pairing of Daniel Beattie and Peter Emmett into second place with a mighty eight under par round of 64, the Mannan Castle duo upset the books in a big way, turning the club’s unenviable record in the competition on its head with just a couple of top ten finishes lighting up its participation in the event in recent years.

On the day though, the McKitterick/McGivern excelled to overcome a far from impressive opening few holes to seal the deal with a nett eagle on the 18th hole.

McGivern and 19-handicapper McKitterick will now go and represent Ireland by playing in the £25,000 tournament final which takes place at Spanish destination Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community.
