Clontibret held out in a frenetic finish to clinch their place in the final of the Greenfield Foods Senior Football Championship in this disappointing and at times scrappy encounter that was played in very blustery conditions in Clones on Sunday last.

Clontibret had been the more purposeful team for most of the match after Magheracloone got off to a very good start with two goals in the opening eight minutes, both by Paudie McMahon, but it was an initiative they failed to build on as they struggled for scores thereafter while Clontibret produced a series of points from a variety of players, to, first of all, draw level by the 24th minute and then take the lead through Pauric Boyle.

Clontibret led by 1-6 to 2-2 at the break with Magheracloone then failing to register a white flag until a minute from the end of normal time by which stage Clontibret led by four points. A goal somewhat against the run of play that saw Paudie McMahon complete his hat trick a minute into the 8 minutes of stoppage time that were added, threw the issue wide open and Clontibret were back pedalling for a spell, but they defended well and broke for match winning points from Conor McManus, free, and Conor Boyle to seal an overall deserved victory.

Magheracloone got off to a flying start as Paudie McMahon hit the first of his hat trick within 30 seconds of the throw-in but 3 minutes later Clontibret were back to parity when Vincent Corey worked his way through the Magheracloone defence and fired left-footed to the roof of the net.

Tomas Freeman was denied by the upright at the other end before Clontibret took the lead for the first time with a point from a free by Conor McManus in the 5th minute. 3 minutes later though they found themselves 2 points in arrears when Alan Kierans drove forward and floated …
