“Following a period of reflection”, Malachy O’Rourke has decided to remain in charge of the Monaghan team. by COLM SHALVEY

Having led Monaghan to Ulster titles in 2013 and 2015, this summer was an underwhelming one for O’Rourke and co., but the Fermanagh native has committed to a fifth year in charge. O’Rourke, who agreed an extension until the end of next year back in 2014, and his selectors are now “looking forward to the challenges a new season will bring”, Monaghan GAA announced in a statement on Tuesday.

A comprehensive win over Down proved to be a false dawn in this year’s Ulster quarter-final, as Monaghan just missed out on a fourth consecutive appearance in the provincial final when they were edged out by Donegal after a replay in the last four.
