GARDAI the Cavan/Monaghan Division are on the alert for a “garden snatch’ gang which has stolen lawn-mowers and other gardening equipment from several premises in the region.
Detectives believe the thieves are using a van to drive along country roads in an effort to target unattended gardening tools which are visible outside houses.
Some of the gardening tools were taken in broad daylight from gardens close to dwellings and busy roads.
It is believed a Traveller gang may be involved and that the stolen equipment may be taken across the Border and sold to unsuspecting householders in the North.
Gardai issued an appeal earlier in the week for any information in relation to suspicious vehicles seen touring roads in the area and they also urged householders to be on the alert for the thieves and keep gardening tools, as well as other outdoor equipment, secure, following the recent spate of thefts in the area. According to a Garda spokesman, more than €10,000 worth of lawnmowers, strimmers, drills and garden tools have been snatched by the thieves in recent days.
