• Our picture by Rory Geary shows Fr Kevin Malcolmson (left) and Fr Stephen Duffy following their investiture during the Ordination Mass held in St Macartan’s Cathedral in Monaghan Town on Sunday last.

Priests from throughout the Diocese of Clogher, and visiting priests from the Irish College in Rome and St Patrick’s College, Maynooth concelebrated the Mass with ordaining prelate Most Reverend Liam S MacDaid, bishop of the diocese.

Sunday was the first occasion since 1994 that more than one priest has been ordained at a ceremony in the diocese. Clogher has now ordained four new priests in the past three years, and another two seminarians are currently studying for the priesthood.

Fr Duffy is from Ballybay in the Tullycorbet parish. Fr Malcolmson comes from Swan’s Cross, which is part of the parish of Killeevan-Currin-Aghabog.
Bishop MacDaid called on Sunday for others to consider following the example of the newly ordained priests: “There must surely also be men and women present who might consider taking up the same challenge and devoting their lives to the kingdom of God.”

The Bishop paid tribute during Sunday’s Mass to Fr Peter McVerry, the Belfast-born Jesuit priest who had come to prominence for his campaigning on behalf of the homeless and disadvantaged in Dublin. Fr McVerry was one of the concelebrating priests, and performed the vesting of Fr Malcolmson, who worked with him in Dublin during a break from his seminary formation.

A full report and more pictures from the ordination are carried on page 23.
