For the first time since the competition’s inauguration four years ago, the top prizes in the Northern Standard Under 18 Monaghan Open Golf Championship have been monopolised by the same club!

On Tuesday last, July 19th, three lads from the Fintona Golf Club in county Tyrone swept the boards at Concra Wood Golf Club by claiming first, second and third place in a record field of 33 entrants.

On what was the hottest day of the year, all the participants did themselves proud and their clubs as well with some of the players lasting the pace that wee bit better!

In that respect, none did better than Fintona ace Pauraic McNelis who proved a class apart in beat the rest of the field and overcame the intense head at Concra over the initial 28 holes and then again over the subsequent nine-hole play-off.

Amazingly, sixteen year old Pauraic was followed home by his younger brother Ryan (14) while in third place was fellow Fintona club golfer and Ulster underage panellist Scott Young (15).

In the sweltering conditions, the best of teenage golfing talent in the border counties and beyond did their damndest to overcome sunburn, sweaty grips and the Fintona contingent …
