PUBLIC CONSULTATION AND “MASTER PLAN” IN THE OFFING TO EXPLORE MUCKNO TOURISM DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL

Plans to engage in a process of public consultation and to develop a “master plan” for the future development of the Hope Castle and Lough Muckno areas of Castleblayney and the realisation of their potential to attract visitors to the county were referred to by Co Tourism Officer Dympna Condra when she addressed Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.

The local authority’s July meeting convened in Castleblayney to enable councillors to tour the scenic Muckno grounds and to examine the Hope Castle building, which is awaiting extensive renovations after undergoing severe fire damage.

The tour, which also took in the refurbishment works nearing completion to one of the estate’s historic gatehouses, was suggested by Co Council Chief Executive Eamonn O’Sullivan as a means for the elected members to appraise the potential of the property, which has recently returned to the ownership of the local authority following the conclusion of protracted legal proceedings.

During the Tourism Officer’s later presentation in the course of the Council’s July meeting, Castleblayney-based Fine Gael councillor Aidan Campbell, referring to the earlier tour, noted that Fáilte Ireland had recently announced details of a grant scheme for large-scale projects to support the long-term sustainable development of tourism in Ireland.
