The Co Monaghan Local Economic and Community Plan 2016-2021 – described as a blueprint for the future development of the county and “one of the most important publications produced by Monaghan Co Council” – was officially launched on Tuesday.

The product of a collaborative engagement between the Co Monaghan Local Community Development Committee and the Co Council’s Strategic Policy Committee on Economic Development and Enterprise Support, the document identifies 127 specific economic and 66 community actions which will be targeted for realisation in the coming years by the relevant local government, economic, community and voluntary stakeholders.

Striking a resolutely positive note in what seemed a conscious rebuff of the more negative connotations attached to the UK’s Brexit decision and its possible implications for Monaghan as a Border county, the tone set by the launch was also very much one of an end of a beginning, rather than the beginning of an end.

“The first step in implementing the plan is its launch today,” the Co Council’s Fintan McPhillips, Chief Officer for the LCDC, stated. “The next step is to ensure that what is in the plan needs to be done, and gets done.”
