Monaghan started their Nicky Rackard Cup campaign with a comfortable win over Fermanagh at Brewster Park,Enniskillen, last Saturday.

First-half goals by Mark Treanor and Brian McGuigan (two) sent Monaghan well clear of a 14-man Fermanagh team weakened by Daniel Teague’s red card on 12 minutes. Seán Corrigan’s accuracy kept Fermanagh in touch, but Monaghan found the net again after the restart through Stephen Lambe, before McGuigan completed his hat-trick. McGuigan, Mark and Peter Treanor, Niall Garland, Paddy Finnegan and Fergal Rafter played key roles for Monaghan, while Fermanagh were far too reliant on Corrigan, who hit all but two of their scores.

Monaghan were off the mark after less than a minute when a strong run by Fergal Rafter released Brian McGuigan to set up Mark Treanor for a point and although Seán Corrigan replied for Fermanagh, Rafter regained the visitors’ lead following good work by Peter Treanor and Niall Garland. Monaghan needed a well-timed challenge by Paddy Finnegan to deny Ciarán Corrigan a possible goal chance, before Garland linked up with Rafter to double their lead.

Monaghan struck their first goal on ten minutes when Stephen Lambe and Mark Treanor combined to put McGuigan through and even though his shot was blocked by Fermanagh keeper Cathal McGarry, Treanor reacted first to net the rebound. Another promising Fermanagh attack was then stopped by a good tackle from Jamie Guinan on Daniel Teague, who was red-carded moments later for an off-the-ball incident with Finnegan.
