CLONES JOURNALIST WAS WITNESS TO BRUSSELS BOMB ATTACKS

“We cannot live in fear or weaken our freedom and fundamental rights here – that’s what such terrorists want,” Clones journalist Cliona Connolly told The Northern Standard yesterday in a reaction to the terrorist bomb attacks which brought mayhem to the streets of the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday.

The former Northern Sound reporter now works as Press Officer for the Irish European People’s Party (EPP) grouping in the European Parliament, and she found herself very close to the unfolding drama.

Cliona reflected: “I heard about the explosions at Brussels airport very early on Tuesday morning as I was listening to radio news so I followed it. I was about to leave and walk to work when I saw a tweet saying smoke was coming from Maelbeek metro station which is a short walk from where I live and I would be walking by it on my way to work.
