An appeal has been made for wider volunteer involvement in the organisation of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Monaghan town.

A meeting to establish a committee to oversee preparations for the big March 17th event will take place in the Market House in the town on Wednesday, February 6 next at 6 pm.

At Monday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District, Cathaoirleach Robbie Gallagher encouraged the general public to come along to the meeting and take part in the event’s preparation.

He requested the Town Centre Co-ordinator, Trevor Connolly, who was in attendance to give a presentation on trade and commercial issues, to highlight the date of the Market House meeting to the local business community.

Mr Connolly said that a meeting of the new Monaghan Town Team would be held on January 26, as part of ongoing plans to formulate a retail strategy for Monaghan Town and District.

The Town Centre Co-ordinator informed the members that the team comprised a number of ‘street ambassadors’ who would represent the street on which their business was located. Also involved were representatives of the Monaghan Tidy Towns Committee, the various Festival Committees, the hotel and restaurant sector, Monaghan Shopping Centre, Fleming’s Super Valu and….
