A CIVIC reception, of huge historic significance, is to be staged in Carrickmacross on Monday evening next,   to mark the occasion of the first-ever EU “summit” being held in the South Monaghan town.

The prestigious reception has been arranged by Monaghan County Council at the Civic Offices to honour the presence of members of the European Parliament , some of whom will be in Ireland for the first time and attending a special conference of the European parliamentary group, the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUENGL), which is scheduled for Hotel Nuremore, Carrickmacross, on 29th –30th September and 1st October.

The hugely influential GUE/NGL grouping consists of 52 MEPs from left wing political parties across the EU and including, from Ireland, the four Sinn Féin MEPs, and the independent MEP,   Luke Flanagan.

The group has the highest number of Irish MEPs across all EU political groupings, and among its affiliate parties are the Greek government party, Syriza, and Podemous, from Spain, which is also prominent in the Spanish political landscape.

It is believed the majority of MEPs in the grouping will be in attendance, alongside up to 100 support staff, political advisors, and a team of interpreters.

The conference is held twice annually throughout European Union member states.

It was previously held in Ireland in 2013 but was not, in fact, due to return until 2027.
