A Monaghan Town woman is currently fundraising ahead of a charitable trip to Mexico to work with street children and orphans.

Mary White, who hails from Cortolvin View, will travel to Playa Del Carmen on 2nd October to work with Global Vision International / Save The Children. Mary, who will stay in the country for a month, will work in a centre that provides safe daycare for street children and orphans.

Speaking to The Northern Standard, Mary, who has three children and two grandchildren, told how she spotted a GVI advertisement on social media last year seeking volunteers.

“I looked through their programmes and Mexico appealed to me,” said Mary.

The local lady, who admitted she was nervous but looking forward to her Mexico trip, will work with children from 9am – 3pm five days a week. The centre aims to provide a safe haven for the children in it and Mary’s role will involve teaching life skills such as good hygiene and cookery and involving the children in sport and general fun and games.

“Watching children grow in confidence is something that I get satisfaction from and I am looking forward to helping these children in Mexico in any way I can,” she added.

Mary will stay in a hostel and is responsible for all the costs her trip will incur…
