Some of the finest young golfers around gathered at Rossmore Golf Club last Friday for the right to be acclaimed this year’s Northern Standard U18 golf Championship winner. KEVIN CARNEY was on hand for the final play-off. 

A super birdie at the final play-off hole proved just the trick for local lad James Owens last weekend as he claimed this year’s Northern Standard U18 County Monaghan Golf Championship title at the picture-postcard Rossmore Golf Club headquarters.

In a field of top notch teenage talent drawn from a raft of golf clubs in county Monaghan, Cavan, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Louth, it was a case of King James as the Rossmore club starlet proved the stand-out performer among over 30 entrants.

All told, twelve of the field qualified for the play off including Rossmore’s very own Eoin McGinnity, Tiarnan McGonnell and the would-be new champion who was positioned just off the leader Cathal Simpson from the Mannan Castle club.

Eventually matters came down to a battle between Charlie McDonnell (Concra Wood), Jack Mongomery (Fintona), and messrs. Simpson and Owens.

Going into the last of the playoff holes it became clear that two of the leading pack would be left to fight it out.

Odds on the talented Simpson securing the title shortened rapidly as he approached the final hole with a three shots lead.
