An action committee has been formed in Monaghan Town to co-ordinate a campaign of resistance against the payment of water charges.

A recent meeting in the Hillgrove Hotel, addressed by Anti-Austerity TD Paul Murphy, was the genesis for the committee’s formation.

At the committee’s first meeting in the Teach na nDaoine Family Resource Centre, future activity work in Monaghan was discussed, and there were plans to strengthen alliances with other grassroots campaign groups in Co Cavan.

In the coming period, the committee aspires to organise anti-water charges stalls in Monaghan Town, to discuss the water charges battle with the public and “to cut through the scare tactics that the Government will try to put into place”, in the words of a committee spokesperson.

The committee has also pointed out that it is not yet in its absolute form, and welcomes anyone interested in getting involved but who wasn’t able to attend any of the previous meetings.

A committee statement added: “If you feel you can’t commit yourself fully to be a committee member, but you still want to involved, you should contact Shane Finnan at 086 2639403, as the wider grassroots network, the stronger the campaign will grow to be.”
