A SOUTH Monaghan couple who lost a son in a tragic road fatality was included in a Families for Justice delegation which travelled to Brussels earlier this month to highlight the circumstances in which they lost loved ones and the manner in which the cases were investigated by the authorities.

The group has felt they were let down by the Irish justice system and is campaigning for greater awareness and further investigation into the circumstances of the death of family members.

The delegation was facilitated by Sinn Féin MEPs Matt Carthy and Lynn Boylan, and was accompanied by journalist Gemma O’Doherty, and the Cavan-based Garda whistleblower, John Wilson.

The group presented their cases in a hearing attended by Mr. Olivier Tell, Head of Unit with the Directorate General of the European Justice Commission, who outlined potential avenues to the members of the delegation in order to further their campaign such as an avenue to the European Court of Human Rights.

The hearing was attended by the majority of MEPs from all parties including Mairead McGuinness, Marion Harkin, and Luke “Ming” Flanagan from the Midlands North West Constituency.
