FROM STAR WARS TO GALLEONS AND FORTS: LEGO CREATIONS BY PAUL DERRICK, CARRICKMACROSS

9 April 2015 No Comments by The Northern Standard

LEGO enthusiast Paul Derrick used half a million bricks to construct the exhibition at Carrickmacross Civic Offices which is open until tomorrow (Friday).

His display includes eight galleons and a model of an Irish medieval fort, something like the one in Kinsale. There are pieces connected with Star Wars. One of the items catching the attention of visitors during the week was the display illustrating the battle of Rorke’s Drift in the Anglo-Zulu war in January 1879. Paul lives in the Carrickmacross area and is a firefighter. To coincide with the event Carrickmacross Library organised a Lego Themed Art Competition for under 8s and over 8s. The prizes were sponsored by Brick.ie and were presented at the official launch of the exhibition a week ago.

Under 8s – copies of the Lego Movie DVD.
Over 8s – Lego Creator Set 31026 ‘Cafe and Bike Shop’ and Lego Movie DVDs.

For children under 8 years of age there was also a colouring competition. For those between the ages 8-12 there was a competition to design a Lego character or Lego vehicle. Pictures by Jimmy Walsh.
