Kerry were still without some star names, but they included 11 players who featured in last year’s All-Ireland final and also brought players of the calibre of Tommy Walsh, Fionn Fitzgerald, Darran O’Sullivan and Marc Ó Sé off the bench. To take away from a fine Monaghan effort would do them a disservice, as they were fully deserving of a first win over the Kingdom since 1988 and a first on Kerry soil since 1987; one that was greeted rapturously by a large travelling support.

Monaghan started slowly, allowing wind-assisted Kerry to kick the first five points, but they went on to outscore the hosts by 1-11 to 0-5 from the 18th minute on. Conor McManus got his side off the mark with a fine left-footed point from play and with Rory Beggan booting over a long-range free that even had Kerry supporters applauding, the gap was down to just three by half-time.
