Significant Municipal District investment planned – but local business buy-in essential for strategy to succeed say councillors

A new scheme of measures to boost the trading environment of Monaghan Town was detailed at Monday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District.

A €50,000 investment in the initiative from the proceeds of the town’s pay parking regime is being proposed – but the view expressed at the meeting was that the plan would not succeed without the concerted co-operation of all sections of the county capital’s retail and service sectors.

The new retail strategy, as detailed by Cathaoirleach Sean Conlon on Monday, provides for the appointment of a “town centre co-ordinator” with responsibility for marketing campaigns, town branding and advertising, managed spend initiatives such as gift cards and loyalty cards, maintaining a database of businesses and customers and organising street events.

The €50,000 funding will also cover the formation of a formal retail strategy team with representation from large and small shop retailers, the hospitality sector, professional services, the local authority, businesspeople, festival committees, the Garda…….
