CASTLEBLAYNEY was again the focus of a ‘good news’ story last week, when the town was deservedly adjudged as having staged the ‘best festival in Ireland’ last year!.

And there was huge jubilation in the mid-Monaghan town on Friday last when the popular and successful Muckno Mania Festival was declared ‘Best Festival in Ireland’ in a special Today FM Best in Ireland Awards’ Competition.

The Best in Ireland Awards was held in association with Board Gais Energy and ran in conjunction with the Ray Darcy morning show on Today FM.

Over the previous number of weeks listeners were asked to nominate individuals and groups who were making a difference in their communities, in addition to a category for Best Festival, other categories included best postman, best shop-keeper, best juvenile coach, best handyman and best neighbour.

The panel of judges, which included celebrities such as Derval O’Rourke, Evelyn Cusack, Colm O’Gorman and Conor Pope, examined all the nominations and shortlisted each category.

In the Festivals’ category, the nominations were reduced to Dunmore Annual Festival, Co. Galway, Lisdoonvarna, Co. Mayo and Muckno Mania Festival in Castleblayney.

All those nominated were invited to send representatives to a special Today FM Ray Darcy Show put out live on air in Board Gais Theatre building on Friday morning last between 10 a.m. and 12 noon.
