Monaghan Co Council has agreed a proposal to provide €25,000 part-sponsorship to rising Co Monaghan rally star Daniel McKenna to assist his participation in the World Junior Rally Championships next year.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Council’s Corporate Policy Group on Monday and follows a lengthy discussion of the plan at the local authority’s December monthly meeting the previous week.

Following Monday’s decision, it was stated that the sponsorship figure is dependent on Mr McKenna, who is from Scotshouse near Clones, completing all stages of the championship, the first round of which takes place in Monaco in January.

Mr McKenna will display a logo promoting the county on his rally car during the championship.

Monaghan Co Council Cathaoirleach Padraig McNally said that Mr McKenna had also agreed to take a road safety promotion role with the local authority, and would be an ambassador for Monaghan, promoting the county at a variety of events.
