NORTHERN STANDARD CUP AT ROSSMORE GOLF CUB SET TO ATTRACT BUMPER ENTRY ON JULY 4TH

The increasingly popular Northern Standard Boys U18 Golf Championship is set to be expanded this year with news that players from outside of county Monaghan will be invited to participate in the competition.

Since its genesis in 2012, the Championship has been confined to under 18 golfers living in county Monaghan but members of host club Rossmore Golf Club who devised the competition have decided to open their doors to the creme de la creme of young golfing talent in neighbouring counties.

“Notices and literature relating to the competition will shortly be sent out to golf clubs in our neighbouring counties,” explained Seamus Meehan, Juvenile Convenor at Rossmore G.C.

“We hope that boys who are full members of golf clubs in Cavan, Armagh, Fermanagh and Tyrone and who are under 18 will take up the challenge and take on the best there is in county Monaghan.

“Over the last two years, there has been a good turnout of talent within Monaghan but we’d like to see bigger numbers competing for the Northern Standard Cup.

“The idea is to provide a competitive outlet for fellas who are not yet at a Connacht Boys or Ulster Boys level.

“There are four or five exceptionally good players in Monaghan every year at under 18 level but we wanted to open up the competition and increase the numbers and have a deeper well of talent involved.”

The growth in the game of golf in recent times has become a global phenomenon but the aficionados of the sport at Rossmore hope that their under 18 championship will morph into an intercounty-wide phenomenon.

Players from Rossmore can be expected to be joined with the best of their peers from Concra Wood (Castleblayney), Clones, Nuremore G.C and Mannan Castle and, this year, the best of young talent from …
