Monaghan’s Power NI Dr. McKenna Cup bid came to a crashing end in last Saturday’s final against Tyrone, despite a promising start at Armagh’s Athletic Grounds.
Monaghan led for large parts of the first half an hour, helped by a Kieran Hughes goal in the 12th minute, but the wheels came off in a 15-minute spell either side of half-time when Tyrone outscored Monaghan by 3-5 to 0-1. Mark Donnelly scored two of those three goals, while the other came from Stephen O’Neill, with Monaghan mistakes contributing to each of them. The closing minutes of the first half also saw Monaghan lose Ronan McNally to a straight red card after an incident involving Peter Harte, leaving them facing a near-impossible task. Harte, who helped to create two of the Red Hand County’s goals, both won and scored a penalty late on to put an extra gloss on the final score.
There were few positives to be taken from this one for Malachy O’Rourke and Monaghan, who were second best in most positions. Tyrone held …
