Representatives of the cream of Co Monaghan and Co Cavan’s young sporting talent – all exemplars in their chosen field – were accorded the honour of a civic reception by Monaghan Co Council in the Four Seasons Hotel on Monday evening.
Presentations were made to the Donaghmoyne ladies football team to mark their All-Ireland success; world champion Irish dancers Jessica and Eileen Cullen and Aoife Bannigan, and world champion handballers Paul Brady from Cavan, and Monaghan’s Eoghan McGinnity.
A pleasant social occasion which followed the monthly meeting of the Co Council saw the formalities preluded by a captivating performance from the young Irish dancing exponents who were present to receive their awards.
Welcoming the invited guests to the event, the Co Council’s Meetings Administrator Carmel Thornton conveyed apologies for inability to attend on behalf of the Co Mayor, Colr Hugh McElvaney, who had suffered a family bereavement, pointing out that Deputy Mayor Noel Keelan would present the awards in the Mayor’s stead.
She also conveyed apologies from Cavan/Monaghan TD Brendan Smith and Co Councillors Seamus Coyle and Cathy Bennett.
Ms Thornton pointed out that Cavan handballer Paul Brady was unfortunately unable to attend the event, but his award would be presented to him at a later stage.
