HIGH COURT RELEASE FOR BUSINESSMAN AS… CARRICK FAMILY IS AT CENTRE OF LEGAL BATTLE

A SOUTH Monaghan businessman and his wife are at the centre of a major legal battle after the businessman’s release from prison by a High Court judge in the wake of a shock claim that he may have been unlawfully detained.
Michael Quinn of Cloughvalley Stores, Carrickmacross, was given a three-months’ jail term for failure to pay a €6,000 fine, and a further €6,500 in costs imposed in his absence in the District Court last July.
The prosecution was taken under Irish Medicines’ Board legislation for the sale of Lemsip, a cold and flu remedy, which was on sale in the shop, having apparently being sourced in the North.
Mr. Quinn’s arrest, and his imprisonment for failure to pay the fine, received national newspaper headlines last week, and he was released on a bond of €100 on Friday last, on the adjournment of a High Court appeal, until January 23rd next.
The pre-Christmas drama for Mr. Quinn, his wife Brigid, and the family, followed an ongoing legal battle, arising from their business being placed in receivership.
