The glitzy shine of TV talent show celebrity competed with the dazzling illumination of the commercial heart of Monaghan Town on Sunday last when thousands braved the chill wet of the winter’s evening to enjoy the official switch-on of the county town’s Christmas lights.
The presence of Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor singing sensations Jai McDowall, Carolynne Poole and Kye Sones generated a frenetic atmosphere among the teen members of the audience during the concert performance which followed the official ignition of the impressive town lighting scheme by the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Town Council, Seamus Treanor.
Earlier an array of local musical talent kept the crowds entertained, with performances from the choirs of St Louis Girls School, St Mary’s Boys National School and Gaelscoil Ultain generating a heartwarming festive atmosphere enhanced by the recital delivered by Monaghan Community Brass Band.
Santa Claus himself emerged onstage to a rapturous reception before Monaghan Gospel Choir performed to an equally enthusiastic ovation.
